We wait for you for the exhibition Dalí Meets Dante in Florence at the Galleria delle Carrozze of Palazzo Medici Riccardi until the 27th September 2015. 750 years ago, Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, so the Fondazione Ambrosiana pays tribute to his hometown exposing the Divine Comedy illustrated by Salvador Dalí.
The exhibition focuses on a set of 100 illustrations that Dalí created drawing inspiration from Dante’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy.Dalí illustrates the Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven reinterpreting it with psychoanalytic gaze. He manages to keep the dreamy atmosphere of Dante by adding his personal touch through its characteristic symbols: soft figures, crutches and blood flying. The supernatural is mixed with bold exploration of spirituality going to create a unique version of the Divine Comedy.In 1950, in view of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri, the Italian government commissioned Salvador Dalí the illustration of the Divine Comedy. Dalí took nine years to create numerous watercolours, hundred in total. The project first launched in Italy, unclaimed the expected success due to the Spanish origins of the artist and the cheeky content of illustrations.Instead he was greeted with enthusiasm in Paris and entrusted in the hands of experienced engravers for the creation of wooden boards necessary for the transfer of the watercolours on paper, the result was an undisputed masterpiece.
The Divine Comedy touches and develops also a fundamental theme of Christianity: the immortal soul of man. Hence, the choice of the second theme of the exhibition, the religion. The relationship of Dalí with religion since childhood has always been hard-fought, in fact he had a devoutly Catholic mother and an atheist father. During adolescence the artist went through a period of denial for the Church, and has become closer it only in older adults.
The exhibition will present several works that deal with religious themes, including the bronze sculptures of St. George and the Dragon and Adam and Eve, the plaster relief of the Last Supper, and graphics taken from the picture book Moses and Monotheism.Price of entry to the exhibition: € 10,00
