Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence: a slice of history to discover

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence is the symbol par excellence of the city, its centre from the religious point of view, and a masterpiece of world art and architecture. The entrance to our bed and breakfast in Florence is at fifty metres away from the Cathedral.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore has a classic basilica plan, with three naves enriched during the Grand Duchy period with coloured marble floors and small temple niches. Its exterior is a blaze of colours with white Carrara, green Prato and red Siena marbles. It is topped by Brunelleschi’s Dome, the largest ever built in masonry, characterized by the greatest fresco ever, 3600 square meters, made by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.

Being a place of worship makes it a landmark for many pilgrims and tourists attending the daily Mass, Rosary and Confessions, Catechesis sessions, Patristic readings, workshops, meditations and choir singing, as well as Eucharistic Adoration every first Thursday of the month.

The Cathedral of Florence can be visited free of charge every day from 10:00 to 17:00, while the entrance to the crypt, the Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo and the adjacent Baptistery of San Giovanni is by payment.

You can buy a cumulative ticket directly online from the official website of the Cathedral of Florence (or on site) at a cost of € 15.00 per person allowing access to all the aforementioned monuments.

For the entrance to the Brunelleschi’s Dome, it is necessary to book the visit time.
