Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence
The exhibition Bill Viola in Florence “Electronic Renaissance” is at Palazzo Strozzi from 10 March to 23 July 2017. The exhibition takes place in a single path between the main floor and the Strozzina, showing the career of this artist, from the first experiments of the seventies up to large installations subsequent to the new millennium.

At the centre of the Viola’s investigation there is humanity: people, bodies, faces are the protagonists of his works, characterized by a highly symbolic and poetic style in which man is called to interact with forces and energies of nature as water and fire, the light and the dark, the cycle of life and that of rebirth.
In the Renaissance setting of Palazzo Strozzi it is created above all an extraordinary dialogue between old and contemporary through an unprecedented direct comparison of the Viola’s works with those masterpieces of the great masters of the past who have been for him a source of inspiration and have marked the evolution of language.
Thus, it celebrates the special relationship between Bill Viola and Florence. In fact, it is here that the artist began his career in the field of video art when, between 1974 and ’76, it was technical director of art / tapes / 22, centre of production and video documentation. Moreover, the relationship between Viola and history and art it is enhanced through important collaborations with museums and institutions such as the Great Museum of the Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery and the Museum of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, but also with the towns of Empoli and Arezzo.
